Where it all began

It started with our CEO’s trip to China. There was not a single person using cash in sight. No one was even pulling out cards. And no, nothing was free but it felt freeing all the same. People were just… scanning and moving on with their day like it was second nature.

China’s cashless evolution took off around 2014-2015 with the rise of Alipay and WeChat Pay. Watching millions of people glide through payments so effortlessly sparked a vision: why shouldn’t Pakistan have this too?📱

Fast forward to 2024. We made history. NayaPay became Pakistan’s first fintech to enable payments at 80 million Alipay+ merchants in China, directly through our app.

Behind the scans

This didn’t come together overnight. Our teams spent months building, testing, retesting, and making sure a scan in the UAE worked just as smoothly as one in Japan. It took a lot of hard work, patience, and more than a few Out of Office trips to get here.

Some days, testing looked like grocery runs in China after long meetings with Alipay+. Other days, it looked like a midnight 7/11 haul in Singapore after a work conference. And every single time we paid at an Alipay+ merchant with NayaPay (read: found an excuse to buy something), the cashier was amused at how excited we got when the payment went through in seconds, while three people behind us held up phones recording the whole thing like proud parents.

We may or may not have taken the “testing phase” a little too seriously and returned with a bag full of 7/11 snacks for the team to try. Whaaat? It’s for work.
